It is known by many as "The Blue Door" as there is NO signage…; Just a mysterious blue door that you enter through, under a stairwell, behind River Oaks Theatre.

"Back-in-the-day" some of our classmates may have explored the bar as it was known for years as "the make-out bar" due to the 2nd floor filled with over 20 couches, dim lighting and classical music.

Six years ago, alumni Emily Eckermann Clay, class of 1984, her husband, Robert, and their business partner, Michael Wells, took over and did a complete restoration. They purchased new couches, new carpet, built out the beautiful back bar with a granite bar top, and swapped out the clusters of scattered art for a collection of black & whites taken by Emily, all photographed locally and featuring different angles and perspectives. Marfreless is also now a non-smoking bar.
There is still no sign for Marfreless. They still play classical music. And while they changed nothing, they upgraded everything!

Marfreless has won awards for their outstanding martinis, they have over 20 premium wines by the glass, and they feature an extensive beer menu.

Stop by this Westchester networking opportunity to meet with former classmates and make new acquaintances from classes of 1968-1985 with our common bond of Westchester. Also, rediscover "our Westchester" as it reopened as Westchester Academy of International Studies in 1999 and meet alumni and scholarship winners!

Our goal with WAA is to financially support our alma mater by fundraising for scholarships. We also support our alumni with volunteerism and attendance at graduation and other functions at the school. Our social opportunities are a fun way to network socially and professionally at the same time as support our beloved school!

There is NO charge to attend our social; however, in order to continue this effort, we would love for you to consider membership to the WAA and/ or scholarship contributions. Please go to www.westchesterwildcats.blogspot.com to learn more about the organization and how you can be an active part!

Meanwhile, come by, kick back, and join us for some fun! =2 0Drink prices are reduced and, in addition, Marfreless will contribute $1 for every wine/ beer/ cocktail to the WAA fund! If you have a few extra bucks, participate in a raffle where Marfreless will be preparing some fun gift baskets with proceeds benefitting WAA! Marfreless also is providing generous, heavy appetizers free of charge to our alumni! Thank you, thank you!!

Our party will be private, but at 6 PM the bar will open to the public. Feel free to carry on a
while longer at Marfreless, or consider continuing with dinner at Mockingbird Bistro owned by '77 classmate John Sheely. John hosted our very successful Spring event last year! http://www.mockingbirdbistro.com/ John has a gorgeous, intimate restaurant less than a mile away from Marfreless. Reservations at Mockingbird are highly recommended! (By the way, remember "Sonny Looks" restaurant? Notice the light fixtures dangling from the ceiling at Mockingbird. They came from Sonny's!)

We thank Marfreless and classmate Emily Eckerman Clay for hosting our APRIL 18th social! We hope to see you there! If you have any questions, feel free to contact Lauri White Ramsey ('77) at wildcats_1977@yahoo.com

**Directions to Marfreless ~ travel East on I-10. Take the Durham exit. Durham will turn into Shepherd. Take a left onto West Gray. Pass the River Oaks Theatre and take an immediate right onto McDuffie. Notice the stairwell and blue door on your right… (Peden Street is a side street of the bar)

Easy Shopping and Scholarship Funding

As part of our on-going fundraising efforts for our Westchester Student Scholarship fund, we joined GoodSearch Shopping network. We encourage you to follow the simple instructions below to do your on-line shopping and also notify your friends and family. There is no charge to you!
A portion of your purchase is automatically credited to the Westchester Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. We will get these funds at the end of the year.

GoodSearch is accessed by going to: http://www.goodsearch.com/goodshop.aspx

In the blank noted “enter your charity here…..” you just type in Westchester Alumni Association and our name will be displayed. Select us and go on to shop at your favorite store.

One of the great things you can do with certain stores like Best Buy, is purchase an item on-line but pick it up at your local store instead of paying shipping. When you are checking out you can check what local stores have your item in stock. At Best Buy, you just complete the transaction and when you show up at the store you bought from, just go to customer service/pickup and your stuff is there waiting for you. David did a beautiful job of having individually signed letters and certificates to each winner in a super presentation folder. The element of surprise to each of our winners was very evident on the parents faces as well as the students.

Thank you to Ralph who presented our scholarship plaque to Principal Pam Butler. Ralph took the extra measure of paying for the plaque and the nameplates for the plaque, as well as re-polishing the plaque from a year's worth of hanging on Westchester wall.

Now the plaque has 6 names from 2007 and 8 names from 2008.

2008 WAA Scholarship Award Recipients

1. Individuals from Classes 1968 to 1985 brought our total scholarship fund to over $7,000. We awarded $1,000 each to six students on April 9, 2007 from the Westchester graduating Class of 2007.

The challenge for Class of 2008 scholarship fundraising:
For the Class of 2008 we challenge each class (1968-1985 and 2004-2007) to raise the most scholarship monies for upcoming graduating class of 2008. Beginning April 1, 2007 through March 31, 2008 all scholarship donations will be tallied by class and individual and sponsor. Check with your employer for matching donations and double your contribution for your class.

Our goal was for each class to sponsor at least one $1,000 scholarship for a total of 22 graduating Westchester students in the Class of 2008.

For the Westchester Graduating Class of 2008 – Thanks to many generous donations – we will be awarding 8 separate $1000 scholarships.

The results of the class-by-class challenge:

By class Amount

1968 510
1969 350
1970 560
1971 20
1973 1739
1974 1075
1975 750
1976 1250
1977 1320
1978 150
1980 550
1982 140
1984 10
2007 20
Community 1170

Total 9614

SHS/WHS Class of 76 All Class 50th Birthday Bash

Please Join Us!

SHS/WHS Class of 76 All Class 50th Birthday Bash

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

7 PM to 1 AM

Westchase Marriott - 2900 Briarpark Drive

To RSVP and purchase tickets go to

www.stratford76.com

Additional information on website. Will you kindly help us by passing this message on and by telling your friends you'll meet them at Mockingbird Bistro! If you received this news thru another classmate and not from us directly, it's likely that we do not have a current email address for you. Go to http://westchesterwildcats.blogspot.com/ to learn more!

If you own or have access to a restaurant, venue, Houston-area property (for bonfires, BBQs, etc.) that would make a great "party place" for this awesome cause, we would love to hear from you! We would love to shake it up and enjoy socials across the Houston area! Secondly, we will help to promote businesses near the campus. We have enjoyed successful events at Clay's Restaurant, which is owned by Damian Seaback, WHS '77 and also by Grisby Grill, owned by Judy Foster Coker, WHS '74. At our homecoming in November at Clay's, we had OVER 100 in attendance! We'd love to help promote your business while, at the same time, build our WAA network. The homecoming will remain our primary function, while the mixers will be "additional" opportunities throughout the year.

Please contact wildcats_1977@yahoo.com if you have interest in hosting a future social! If anyone is interested in helping please call the school and get information or e-mail him at the Westchester or Spring Branch website.

Jeff motioned to adjourn the meeting. Carolyn seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30.

Treasury Report for March 10, 2008 Board meeting

Current assets of February 29, 2008,

Cash in checking account $5,519
CD for Student Scholarship fund (restricted) 5,776
CD – Wranglerettes (restricted) 3,095
CD – Class of 1976 (restricted) 1,482

The Google AdSense revenue deposited in February was $204.54.

As of February 29, 2008, there are 10 polo shirts remaining. I was roped into the board by Pam Mudd ‘73 who somehow found me and my soft heart. She invited me to the first graduation at Westchester which was several years ago. They only graduated something like 60 seniors and the enrollment is being kept small so I think the max graduation will be around 150 within a few years.

The easiest way to describe Westchester now is as a magnet school, but they don’t call it one. They intentionally keep enrollment small, I believe a total of 1000-1200 students for grades 6-12 and it is one of only 12 schools in Houston with an International Baccalaureate (IB) program and the only one in SBISD. Kinda like Awty International School but without the major bucks and big head requirement (and my parents were friends of K and Jack Awty). As an International Studies school, they drive the students to develop international skills, develop a second language, and the curriculum includes many accelerated courses also. The school naturally draws students that have moved to the SBISD area from other countries so it has become a melting pot so to speak. Not all students enter the IB program but it appears that the IB program pushes all Westchester students to excel.

I’ve met some of these students and they have all been more mature than I was when I was there. They have to apply to enter this school and that brings in a higher standard that is easily visible when talking with them. And the kids that we have applying for scholarships have all done extensive community and school service, way beyond what I did. These kids come from all over the Spring Branch district so many do not have the same parental backing that we enjoyed. That is one of the hard things to get out to the alumni. These aren’t rich brats, not that we were, but you remember that there were many students with silver and gold spoons in their mouths. Lots of these kids are from the other side of the tracks trying to make a better life for themselves by putting in the hard work and taking the risk of not going to school with their neighborhood buds. After Westchester effectively died, I am pumped that it has arisen again and with this caliber of student. As these new graduates start coming back to the area after college, we hope they join the alumni association and grow it. As it is, the new Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) alumni association has rolled into the Westchester Alumni Association (WAA) so we are all one.

The WAA is a really new group, only 2-3 years old. We are trying to get in touch with alumni and start doing more functions. We already hold a homecoming outing which is the Stratford/Memorial game since WAIS can not support a football team with their student population. Let me know if you want me to and I can get your email into the organization so you will get emails of events in the future. And feel free to let other alumni know about us. Thanks again for the contribution. I’ll let you know who ends up getting scholarships and where they are headed off to for college.

David T. Everyone introduced themselves and told what year they graduated and their line of business.

Agenda Items:

Officer and Board Member expectations were addressed by Ralph Devine.

These issues are in the By-laws of the association that each board member signed and Ralph wanted to address a few of them.
· Regular attendance at meetings is expected for all Board Members and Officers. Call or Email in advance if you can not attend a meeting. Non-attendance, without excuse as stated in the By-laws, may lead to dismissal as an Officer or from the Board.
· The committee chairs have the responsibility to conduct committee activities and report those activities back to the Officers and Board on a regular basis. Committee meetings and business can be conducted and encouraged to occur outside of the one hour monthly Officer and Board Meetings.
· Officer and Board Meetings are to be used primarily for presentation of Committee results and for committees to receive authorization to conduct activities on behalf organization or make expenditures on behalf of the organization.
· The two main goals for 2008 are to 1) Build the Membership in the WAA organization and increase the Scholarship fund to allow the fund to become a self perpetuating fund. All Committee should be aware of these goals and back these goals with their activities.
· This organization is a great opportunity to help Westchester graduates with scholarships and to be able to interact with other people.
· Committee Chairs/Leaders are expected to have a written mission/purpose statement and an activities action plan ready for presentation at the February meeting of the Officers and Board.

Membership Recruiting/Scholarship donations 2008-

What do we need to do for effective fundraising? Barry Abrams, class of ’71, who is a board member of SBEF, Spring Branch Education Foundation, came to address this question and provide experience and ideas to help with our Scholarship Fund donation efforts. The SBEF Mission is to raise funds for the SBISD students, they have teacher/student scholarships, they give to the arts, field trips and they give grants to specific campus’, mentor programs and the Good Neighbor program.
This foundation may be a place to donate money for the WAA scholarships. We have to look into the public charity tax codes 501C3 and 5091. Through directing Scholarship donations through the SBEF the Westchester Alumni Association Donations would be eligible to be corporate matched, and still remain a directed gift specifically for Westchester Academy of International Studies students. For example some corporations have a 3 to 1 matching program for qualifying organization donations used for Educational Grants or Scholarships.

New Business-

· We are interested in getting in contact with the following classes who might be having a class reunion this year, ’68,’73, ’78 ‘83
· Laurie addressed how many and what kinds of events are we interested in participating in each year.
· The web site is in desperate need to be monitored and updated. We are trying to find someone who will volunteer to be our WEBMASTER at no cost…. anyone interested? Your time / dollar value of the work could possibly be a donation to the organization.

Treasury Report for January 14, 2008 Board meeting

As of December 31, 2007, we have $15,468 in cash and Certificate of Deposits in Washington Mutual Bank. This includes $5,115 in checking account, $3,095 in Wranglerette restricted funds in a CD, $1,482 in Class of 1976 restricted funds in a CD, and $5,776 in restricted Student Scholarship funds.

As of December 31, 2007, there are 10 polo shirts remaining. Over 2006 and 2007 we collected $1540 in donations for the polo shirts. Our costs were $1429. We now have a profit of $111.

For the calendar year 2007, we collected $1,970 in memberships. Expenses for 2007 included $100 advertising, $690 homecoming, $466 scholarship dinner, $100 meeting, $80 donation, $50 misc and $90 website. Net profit for 2007 = $394.
Submitted by Pamela Mudd Conlan, Treasurer

Scholarship Fund Report

A total of $11,801.50 has been collected in scholarship funds from individual alumni and the community at large from January 2005 through December 31, 2007.

$1,070 in 2005
$6,046 in 2006
$4,685 in 2007
$6,000 was awarded as scholarships in 2007

Therefore, we have $5,801 for future scholarships. Further efforts for January through March for additional donations are needed to reach our $22,000 goal for Class of 2008.
Submitted by Pamela Mudd Conlan, Treasurer

Student Scholarship Fund
WAIS Class of 2008

Challenge

The Class of 1972 raised almost $4,000 in scholarship money for the Class of 2007. Individuals from Classes 1968 to 1985 brought our total scholarship fund to over $7,000. We awarded $1,000 each to six students on April 9, 2007 from the Westchester graduating Class of 2007.

Here’s the challenge:
For the Class of 2008 we challenge each class (1968-1985 and 2004-2007) to raise the most scholarship monies for upcoming graduating class of 2008. Beginning April 1, 2007 through March 31, 2008 all scholarship donations will be tallied by class and individual and sponsor. Check with your employer for matching donations and double your contribution for your class.

Our goal is for each class to sponsor at least one $1,000 scholarship for a total of 22 graduating Westchester students in the Class of 2008.

Class by Class Scholarship Challenge Results are shown in the image below. We hope to have a social every 4 months or so.

We would like to give Westchester classmates the opportunity to put their names into the hat FIRST ~ if you own or have access to a restaurant, venue, Houston-area property (for bonfires, BBQs, etc.) that would make a great "party place" for this awesome cause, we would love to hear from you! If you know of a classmate who might have interest in this opportunity to promote their business, please pass this on!
If you happen to miss one, you won't have to wait too long till another rolls around!

Please contact Lauri.L.Ramsey@conocophillips.com if you have interest in hosting a future social! We're looking forward to a very festive 2008! We even had two children of our Alumni who became Best Friends Forever at the reunion. I hope everyone can make it next year. Ms. Tharpe has been an educator for 26 years, the last 22 having been spent teaching social studies at Spring Oaks. Before that, she taught 4 years at Northbrook High. She earned her degree at LSU and has remained a big supporter of the Bayou Bengals (we can tell by the pictures of tigers on her classroom walls). Ms. Tharpe is an engaging teacher who is always seeking out ways to make history come alive for her students. She often surprises her students with interesting facts they can’t find in textbooks. She has taken trips to historical sites across the US in order to gather information about historical periods she teaches, and she brings this information back to her students. Ms. Tharpe is a conscientious and energetic teacher, and we are happy to have her at Spring Oaks!

Westchester Adademy for International Studies Excels

Texas business group honors four schools for high performance

Four district campuses have been named Honor Roll schools by a highly regarded nonprofit business and education group. Earning recognition this year are Memorial High, Memorial Middle, Frostwood Elementary and Westchester Academy for International Studies, the district’s only charter middle and high school.

The Austin-based Texas Business & Education Coalition (TBEC) awards are issued each year to only a select number of Texas public schools based on high, sustained student academic performance. To be honored, schools are compared with individual peer schools and student groups, and then tracked over a multiyear period.

“The TBEC Honor Roll is the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence in Texas. Among other factors, these schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard – Commended – in every subject during the past three school years,” says coalition Executive Director John H. Stevens.
Honor Roll schools will be recognized Oct. 22 with special seminar sessions and an evening dinner at the Austin Hilton Hotel.

Memorial High and Memorial Middle schools were both named 2006 TBEC Honor Roll Schools. Frostwood Elementary is a repeat TBEC honoree, too, and several other SBISD campuses have also earned the highly regarded award in recent years. TBEC has also rated Memorial High as one of the state’s best high schools.

Cornerstone Academy, the district’s other charter middle school, was a three-time Honor Roll award recipient. Spring Oaks Middle has been a repeat TBEC award winner, too.
Formed in 1989, TBEC is a nonprofit group composed of business executives and education leaders. They are dedicated to improving the performance of public schools by influencing state education policy and fostering community-based initiatives to improve our schools.
Principals for this year’s award-winning schools include Memorial High’s Steve Shorter and Westchester Academy’s Pamela Butler. Memorial Middle’s new principal is Lisa Weir.
Longtime Frostwood Elementary Principal Lynda Maxwell is now a district administrator. Replacing her at Frostwood is new Principal Jan Griffin.

A few principals had this to say:

“I am thrilled for the Frostwood staff and community! This is the second time that we have won this award, and that does not happen by accident. It comes from a commitment to collaboration that always focuses on the best interest of our students. The Frostwood parents and teachers listen to one another with openness, compassion and respect and make decisions that consistently lead to excellence for all our children.” – Lynda Maxwell, former Frostwood principal

“Memorial High School is again honored to be recognized for the large number of high-achieving students at our school. Being named a Texas Honor Roll School is a tribute to our faculty, students and community for their high standards of achievement.” – Steve Shorter, Memorial High principal

"When our students heard the news in a recent assembly, they all cheered! I am so very proud of our faculty, staff, students and parents. We have all worked so hard to increase our TAKS scores, close our achievement gaps, and increase Commended Levels on TAKS. We truly believe that all students can achieve at very high levels given the right set of circumstances. Recognition by the Texas Business & Education Coalition is greatly appreciated by everyone here at Westchester Academy." -- Campus Director Pam Butler

5th Annual Westchester All Alumni Homecoming

Westchester Alumni Association This includes $3,188 in Wranglerette restricted funds in a CD, $1,434 in Class of 1976 restricted funds in a CD, $3,111 in restricted Student Scholarship funds, and $4,265 in discretionary Alumni funds.

As of August 31, 2007, we need another 7 shirts with $40 donations collected for each shirt to cover our costs. There are 21 shirts remaining. These shirts should be marketed through the website. After reaching our break-even point, the remaining shirts can be marketed that a portion of the price is earmarked for the scholarship fund. Every effort should be made by all board members and officers to encourage donations at homecoming to reduce the polo shirt inventory.

Scholarship Committee Report

Diligent fundraising efforts for donations for the Class of 2008 scholarships have commenced. David West agreed to be our Scholarship Fundraising chairman. David is in the process of contacting various vendors for Westchester and SBISD. A meeting at WAIS with Beverly Martin was held on Friday August 31st at 2 p.m. with David West and Ralph Devine in attendance. Headway was made during this meeting. There are two Saturday events at the school, one in Oct and the other in spring, that are carnival type situations that WAA can participate. Beverly is going to contact the President of the Westchester PTA so we can hopefully get acquainted. The PTA’s fundraising is not for scholarships so there will not be a competitive situation. There is also a lady at the SBISD Admin Bldg that handles community affairs that Beverly recommended we contact. We will have to involve Pam Butler, Principal of WAIS, when we want to interact with the parents so perhaps we should contact her soon about this October event to get invited to participate.

Our goal is to double the number of scholarship recipients for Class of 2008. We have 8 months to raise $12,000. We strongly urge all Westchester alums to make their tax-deductible donation now. Please remember that 100% of each dollar donated to the scholarship fund goes directly to scholarships. Any administrative costs are paid through membership dues and other fundraising monies.

We’ve collected $560.00 in scholarship funds from individual alumni, plus $50 from the WAIS counselor and $1,600.00 from lifetime memberships in 2007. Collections at homecoming are essential in raising the remainder of the funds needed to reach our $12,000 goal for Class of 2008.

Membership Committee Report

The membership count through August 31, 2007 is as follows:

Lifetime @ $250 7
Lifetime–joint @ $450 1 couple
Members @ $15 19
Members @ $20 15
Joint @ $25 1 couple

Total members 45

Each class team leader is encouraged to contact their individual class with a copy of the new membership form and their personal words about membership and scholarship fundraising efforts.

We have 7 lifetime memberships individual and 1 joint lifetime memberships received through August 31, 2007, which is an additional $1,600 for scholarship fund. Lifetime members are the way to go if we want to build a nest egg for perpetuity.

Class Directory Committee Report

Ralph Devine is diligently working on combining each of our class databases into one on Microsoft Access. If you have contact information on any Westchester classmates, please send it to: Westchester@Wranglerettes.com.

Thank you Ralph for taking on this difficult and challenging project. The completion of this project will be instrumental in communicating with all classes.

Class by class scholarship Challenge from April 1 through August 31, 2007

by year amount by amount year
1968 $510 $510 1968
1969 $300 $480 1973
1970 $ 10 $430 1975
1971 $ 10 $300 1969
1973 $480 $250 1976
1975 $430 $ 50 1980
1976 $250 $ 35 1982
1980 $ 50 $ 20 2007

1982 $ 35 $ 10 1970
2007 $ 20 $ 10 1971

Westchester Alumni Association
Student Scholarship Fund
Class of 2008
Challenge

The Class of 1972 raised almost $4,000 in scholarship money for the Class of 2007. Individuals from Classes 1968 to 1985 brought our total scholarship fund to over $7000. The Class of 1972 was mentioned as sponsoring 3 of the six scholarships awarded. This mention was published in area papers and in the Class of 2007 commencement graduation program. We awarded $1,000 to six students on April 9, 2007 from the Westchester graduating Class of 2007.

Submitted by Pamela Mudd Conlan, Treasurer

Key words: electronics, AOL, YAHOO, Computer, Home Theater

A Letter From the WAA President

Westchester Alumni Association

Dear Westchester Classmates and Alumni,

We would like to invite you to renew your membership in the Westchester Alumni Association or join as a new member in 2007. We are now offering two types of Memberships at your request.

LIFETIME and ANNUAL membership are now offered. Both provide Full Member status, however, the Annual membership requires renewal on a yearly basis whereas the Lifetime membership requires no further renewals.

Westchester is still open and performing well. Our school is now officially called the Westchester Academy for International Studies and is one of only 70 schools in the state of Texas qualified to offer an International Baccalaureate degree to it’s graduates. In 2007 we provided $6,000 dollars in scholarships to Westchester Graduates thanks to your generous donations. We are hoping through our Lifetime membership campaign to establish a self perpetuating Scholarship Fund to allow us to continue this worthwhile effort.

Go to Our Website at http://www.westchesterwildcats.com/
